I was delighted and honoured to be appointed as the new Head Teacher for Mortimer Community College and I am thoroughly enjoying getting to know parents and carers, students, staff and governors. A successful and happy school depends on all of us working together. Parents and carers make an important contribution to students’ achievements at school and I want to develop a relationship between the school and parents and carers that will benefit everyone. Having been here for a full half term it really does feel like I have never worked anywhere else and I have found staff to be extremely hard working whilst the vast majority of students are ready for the exciting challenges that lie ahead.
Mortimer Community College has a history of supporting students through their education and that is something I am looking to build upon. I am looking forward to finding out more about the school so that the changes we make in this new chapter of the school’s history are supported by the whole school community. Indeed, a few subtle changes have already been made. For example, on parents evening this year all students and parents will receive a personalised subject specific report from every teacher who teaches your child. I believe this will give both you and your child a point of reference for further improvement in subjects at school. With this in mind below are a few dates for your diary as I would be delighted if you could join us at the following parent evenings.
Year 9 22 March 3.30pm – 5.30pm
Year 10 17 May 3.30pm – 5.30pm
Year 8 12 July 3.30pm – 5.30pm
I have very high expectations of the young people who attend our school and of the dedicated staff who already work here who look to home in order that the students can flourish whilst they are in our care. No chewing on site, coats off in lessons and ear phones being out of sight in lessons and at lesson changeover are just a few tweaks we have already made to promote a more professional learning environment. After February half term mobile phones are banned from being used in lessons (unless directed by a member of staff) and at lesson change over and only permitted at break and lunch time.
We have already held a number of events and will be holding more events over the next term which will provide an opportunity for me and the staff to meet with you and discuss the building of a successful partnership. I have already had the opportunity to speak with a number of parents and carers and the feedback has been very positive. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
I look forward to working with you and your children.
Mr S Hignett
